Braces in Dubai questions?
Ask the Swedish Dental Clinic, we have all the answers

Braces is a common word for fixed orthodontic appliances. These are used for straightening teeth and correcting improper bites. Teeth braces are used in both children and adults and come in many different shapes, colours and sizes.

It is important that the diagnosis, treatment and follow up visits are done by a specialist orthodontist; this is a dentist who has undergone an additional 3 years fulltime studies at a university to learn how to treat patients with braces and other orthodontic appliances.

What are braces?

Teeth braces are brackets that are glued onto the teeth and that stay on for the duration of the treatment. Metal wires are then placed on top of the brackets and locked in place with tiny rubber or metal rings (ligatures). The rubber rings can be in a variety of colours, and usually the kids enjoy changing them at their monthly follow up visits. The wires are changed and adjusted at every visit in order to control the movement of the teeth and make sure they are straightening properly. The duration of the treatment is individual and depends on the severity of the problem.

At the end of the treatment, the braces are removed from the teeth and a retainer can be placed to keep the teeth and the bite in their new position.

Why is this procedure important?

Braces can help with:

  • Improving the aesthetics and the look of your smile, by straightening and aligning the teeth.
  • Improving the bite and the function of your teeth, thereby increasing the chances of maintaining and keeping your teeth for longer
  • Straight and aligned teeth are easier to keep clean and maintain, both when brushing and when using floss or toothpicks.
  • Sometimes when a tooth has been extracted and the neighbouring teeth have moved/shifted, then braces can help to open up the gap between the teeth so that implants can be placed.
  • Correct poor bites where thumbsucking, tongue pressing or other bad habits have caused the teeth to shift, or work to break the habits.
  • Some patients have had treatment with braces, but the teeth have shifted or moved (relapsed) afterwards because they have not had any retainers. Here braces can correct the relapse.

What are the different types of braces?

There are many different forms of braces in Dubai, some are fixed to the teeth while others are removable. The most common types are:

  • Metal braces; these are the classical “train tracks” where the brackets are metallic, very strong and durable.
  • Ceramic braces; very similar to metal braces, but they are made of white ceramic and so are less visible, which makes them appealing for some patients who are conscious about not having any metal on their teeth.
  • Lingual braces; the brackets and wires are placed at the back of the teeth so that they are not visible. Lingual braces are perfect for those who are not keen to show off their braces!
  • Invisalign; transparent, super thin, removable trays which are custom made to straighten your teeth.
  • Inman aligners; removable braces made of plastic, with some thin metal wires, used to straighten the teeth.

When getting your teeth straightening done with dental braces in Dubai it is important that you have a Specialist Orthodontist who is doing the treatment in order to diagnose and perform the treatment in the best way possible.
